How Industrial Furnaces Increase Production [Workshop]

Thomas Anderson, P.E., Project Manager at Onex Inc. will present Increased Production Through Furnace Design at a two-day Heating Technology Workshop hosted by the Forging Industry Association (virtually and in-person) next week at the organization’s new headquarters in Ohio.

Attendees will get a run-through of the four types of Industrial furnaces designs along with key design features for each type and how they can increase production efficiency. 

There are four typical types of industrial furnaces: 

  1. Box Type

  2. Car Bottom

  3. Tip-Up 

  4. Hood Type

There are four ways to increase production efficiency in your industrial furnace design:

  • Burner Locations and Quantity

  • Flue Locations

  • Reliable Mechanical Movements

  • Pressure and Sealing Atmosphere

Why is Box Type furnace design so important?

In a Box Type furnace, having high-velocity burners help to provide off-gas mixing which aids in heat distribution and product temperature uniformity. In addition, proper flue positioning allows for the chamber gasses to mix properly in the furnace. And, a door that opens/closes quickly and has a proper seal reduces loading/unloading times while reducing the amount of heat losses.

Why is a Car Bottom furnace design so important?

A quick and well-built car bottom furnace system can provide reliable movement to your process for decades. Properly selected refractory and setting piers paired with a good drive system will allow for faster changeover speeds to reduce downtime. The end result – increased production and reduced fuel consumption.

What elements make up a well designed Industrial Tip-Up furnace?

A Tip-Up furnace requires a reliable life system and durable, effective edge seal to help with furnace pressure and prevent equipment damage due to heat. These elements enable faster turnaround and changeover speeds to increase production time while reducing fuel consumption charges.

What are important industrial Hood Furnace design elements? 

Balancing the hood will make the lifting and lowering into position simpler and reliable. The center of gravity determined during the design process can be adjusted with weight during commissioning. Combined with optimal sealing this ensures good furnace pressure to prevent head damage while improving fuel consumption.
